Dudley Dewitt Douglas was born October 19, 1948 in Santa Barbara, California.
He grew up in the countryside in a village called Paradise Camp, living a simple and natural lifestyle, which created already in his early days his Life Philosophy: “Life is Art. Art is Life!”
Today he lives both in California and in Mexico.
Jesus Sculpture in La Cruz de Huanacaxtle
In January 2010 Dudley started his first project in La Cruz de Huanacaxtle, Mexico – his second large Jesus Sculpture after doing one already in Oregon, USA in 2002; this one is much taller though, almost 14 feet. It is being made of primavera and parota, both woods who represent the area of Nayarit, Mexico.
He was lucky to find the perfect location to work on Jesus out of town on a private property of a good friend. This is an empty lot directly at the Pacific ocean. The fact that there is no electricity available at the property agrees with the artist, who is living on solar power in his house in Northern California since 30 years.
“Producing my own electricity with solar power is not something new to me. The use of natural resources is part of my lifestyle. Here in Mexico I am working with two solar panels which I brought all the way from North California to Nayarit, Mexico on my van. Even in isolated spots on my trip down here was I able to carve with my tools.”
The photo shows the big Jesus Sculpture in Mexico, which is still in progress.
Update: A few days ago Dudley moved his sculpture to a new location to expose his work and himself to the public.
